My Top 5's are coming to a close now, and I had to include of my favorite indie games of 2012. It seems that with every year, indie games continue to improve. In a congested category, it was easy to pick my favorites from 2012.
5. Hotline Miami
Hotline Miami was a game that really caught me by surprise, it really came out of nowhere. The game instantly clicked with me, with the excessive use of violence, and the overall dark tones the game exuded. The game was simple, kill everyone inside the specific building, with only one hit kills, the game was a brutal challenge. That added something to the game, it made you think on your feet. It also encouraged you to restart levels if you didn't like your current playthrough. Once you started the game up, you really couldn't put it down, and thats why its my number 5.
4. Torchlight 2
One of the great debates of 2012, Torchlight 2 or Diablo III? Both games were in the same genre, and they each had their own similarities with one another. In the end, Torchlight 2 had much more staying power than Diablo 3, but thats just my personal opinion. I know a lot of people would agree, and a lot would disagree. Torchlight 1 was already a stellar game, and the sequel improved on every facet from the first game. I can't wait to see what Runic will do with their next title.
3. To The Moon
I know I've been constantly talking about To The Moon, so I won't this time around. I already gave this game my favorite soundtrack honor, it was just an achievement in storytelling. If you haven't tried it, you need too.
A lot of people have forgotten about the the charming downloadable title, but I haven't. Fez was the perfect indie game, exploring a new world, with pristine visuals and a great soundtrack to boot, it was terrific from the beginning to the end. After watching Indie Game: The Movie, I found a new respect for the creator of Fez, and I even appreciated the game that much more.
After making my final decision, I had to go back and experience Journey once again. We already know how great the soundtrack is, it was achievement on its own. The game was short, but it doesn't hurt the game in any way. Going back through the game again had you exploring different paths that you might have-not explored in previous playthroughs. This was my favorite indie game of 2012, and it might even be my overall favorite as well.
